| Creating Scholarships to Honor Loved Ones |
Frederick '51 and Margaret Blom of Timonium, Md., have established two scholarships at Concordia to honor family members. The Bloms have lived modestly during Fred's 36-year career with AT&T-Lucent. Marge has been a homemaker, raising four children, and actively volunteering with various churches for 55 years. They say their endowments were easy to create because of the assistance of the Office of Advancement staff. "They helped us decide how to set them up and provided us with information on what we wanted to do," says Fred. "It was important to us to have input on exactly where our money would go."
The Bloms initially chose to complete a scholarship first begun by Fred's sister, to help social work majors pay expenses while doing internships. Ruth Blom '48 died before her scholarship was fully funded. "So we decided to follow through on it the way she wanted," says Fred. "My sister had loaned me money so I could attend Concordia, and she had always been sympathetic toward helping people. For many years we sent money to help her scholarship grow, and my employer often matched our gifts."
Two years ago, Fred and Marge created a scholarship to honor Marge's father, who had been a pharmacist and lifelong advocate of higher education. The John A. Dorjahn Health Careers Scholarship now benefits students planning careers in medicine.
"We're very happy with the people at Concordia and the work the college is doing, so we decided we'd put some of our money there in a way we'd like to see it used," says Marge. "We are very aware of and very happy with the quality of people Concordia is sending into the world."
The Bloms have written their wills to provide that a CRUT (Charitable Remainder Unitrust) be established when they have both died. This provides income to their children (90 percent of the payout) and money to further fund the Ruth Blom and John A. Dorjahn Scholarships (10 percent of the payout) until the death of their last child. The remaining value of the unitrust will finalize the funding of the two scholarships and provide funds for Concordia to use for appropriate purposes.
"A charitable remainder unitrust is a way for us to share our good fortune with our children and also have it eventually end up in a place of our choosing," says Fred. "We think it is a very equitable arrangement."
