Deeds Farm

The pathway to charitable giving for Darlene Ross began with a Porsche automobile she and her husband stored in their Benson, Minn., garage.

"There was a drive on to build the bell tower, and my husband, a civil engineer, became interested in it. We didn't have a lot of cash, but we had that car, so we thought, why not give the Porsche to Concordia? It was painless for us and it worked out beautifully. Everybody was happy."

Unfortunately, Kenneth Ross died unexpectedly shortly thereafter. Darlene, a 1960 graduate and career schoolteacher, wanted to simplify her life and the numerous decisions about finances she faced. Her former pastor in Benson, the Rev. Lyle Rich '54, was a loyal advocate of Concordia and the value of charitable giving. Darlene credits Rich and the college's inspiring and enduring mission with influencing her. "After I was able to get a handle on things, I called the Advancement Office for advice and they were very helpful."

When the time was right for her, Darlene deeded over a farm that had been in her family for years in exchange for a charitable gift annuity. After receiving a significant tax deduction that year, she now receives an annual annuity check from Concordia. "There wasn't much money in our family when I was a student, and back then I never would have imagined Concordia would be giving me money. Whenever I get that check I think it's so funny. I'll bet everyone is chuckling about how things turned out.
